Overview

The Universal Audio 2-1176 combines two legendary 1176LN compressors into a single 2U rack unit, delivering the iconic FET-based compression that has shaped countless hit records since 1967. Building on the circuit design of UA’s successful 6176 Channel Strip, this dual-channel powerhouse offers uncompromising sound quality with all the same premium components, stereo-matched for exceptional imaging.

This professional limiting amplifier maintains the same Class A circuitry, custom-designed output transformers, and FET-type gain reduction that made the original 1176LN legendary. Each channel operates independently in dual-mono mode, or can be linked for true stereo operation, making it perfect for everything from vocal tracking to drum room processing. The 2-1176 has earned its place in world-class studios, with artists ranging from Norah Jones to Helmet relying on its distinctive character for their recordings.

Unlike the vintage pushbutton switches found on classic 1176 models, the Universal Audio 2-1176 employs precision rotary switches for ratio and meter functions, while maintaining metal-film resistors that deliver a lower noise floor than the carbon-film resistors used in original vintage units. This modernized approach preserves the essential 1176 sound while improving reliability and reducing noise, making it ideal for contemporary recording environments where pristine signal quality is paramount.

The unit retains all the beloved characteristics that have made the 1176 indispensable – the famous “All” setting that recreates the compression curve and added distortion of pushing all four ratio buttons simultaneously on vintage units, ultra-fast attack times ranging from 20 microseconds to 800 microseconds, and the ability to achieve up to 40 dB of total gain across both input and output controls. Whether you’re seeking transparent dynamic control or deliberate harmonic enhancement, the Universal Audio 2-1176 delivers the sonic signature that has defined professional audio for over five decades.

Reviews and Articles

  • Mix Magazine – Barry Rudolph provides an in-depth comparison of the UA 1176LN reissue technology that forms the foundation of the 2-1176, noting that “the reissue won – it was the cleanest” when tested against multiple vintage units, particularly excelling on piano and low-frequency sources due to its superior clarity and reduced grittiness compared to aging vintage hardware.  https://www.barryrudolph.com/mix/ua1176.html
  • Mixonline – Their comprehensive review highlights the 2-1176’s practical improvements over vintage designs, praising the rotary switches for ratio and meter functions as more reliable than traditional pushbuttons, while noting that “all rotary controls sport highly visible white hash marks on contrasting black plastic knobs” for excellent studio visibility. https://www.mixonline.com/technology/universal-audio-2-1176-dual-limiting-amplifier-370186
  • Gearspace User Reviews – Professional users consistently praise the unit’s versatility and build quality. One engineer noted: “The UA 2-1176 has proven to be a solid and dependable sonic tool that gets plenty of use in my project studio… Works well for a lot of drum applications: snare – it adds ‘weight’ ‘pop’ to the hit like no other compressor I’ve used”. Another user emphasized its stereo capabilities: “I know there are reviews of the UA 1176 on the review forum but the 2-1176 gives me a lot of options with regards to running things stereo or just having two independent compressors”. https://gearspace.com/board/reviews/707022-ua-2-1176-twin-vintage-limiting-amplifier.html
  • Sound on Sound – While not reviewing the 2-1176 specifically, Sound on Sound’s extensive coverage of 1176 technology validates the core circuit design, with their analysis of UA’s hardware consistently noting the authentic recreation of the original FET compression characteristics and the company’s attention to historical accuracy in their reissue program.  https://www.soundonsound.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=41031
  • Professional Studio Usage – The 2-1176 has been documented in use by notable engineers and artists, with its stereo linking capabilities making it particularly valuable for drum overheads, stereo percussion, and mix bus processing, demonstrating its acceptance in professional recording environments where sonic integrity is paramount. https://gearspace.com/gear/universal-audio/2-1176
