Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Chandler LTD-2 “Sterling Mod”?

The Chandler Limited LTD-2 “Sterling Mod” is a hand-wired analog compressor/limiter based on the classic Neve 2254 – the diode-bridge design that is the Class A predecessor to the 2264 and 33609. Built with real Neve-style transformers and Class A circuitry, and no tubes, it delivers thick, forward, vintage Neve “glue” and weight. The “Sterling Mod” adds mastering-grade refinements like stepped controls and a matched stereo pair.

What is the Chandler LTD-2 best for?

The LTD-2 is best for adding rich, vintage Neve character and “glue” to drums, vocals, bass, synths, and the mix bus. It is a famous snare compressor and excels across a drum bus or overheads, and its transformer color makes mixes feel bigger and more cohesive. With its stepped controls it is equally at home on mastering and stereo-bus duties.

What is the “Sterling Mod”?

The “Sterling Mod” is a set of custom, mastering-focused modifications to the standard LTD-2, including fully stepped controls, true bypass, and matched stereo pairing. The stepped controls were originally requested by mastering legend Greg Calbi of Sterling Sound, so engineers could dial in and recall exact settings. These tweaks turn a vintage-voiced Neve compressor into a precise, recall-friendly mastering tool.

What controls does the Chandler LTD-2 have?

The LTD-2 gives you Threshold, a 6-position stepped Attack, a 6-position stepped Release (including an Auto setting), and 1 dB stepped gain make-up, plus stereo link and a gain-reduction meter. A handy bypass mode passes your audio through the unit’s transformers and circuitry for color without any compression. The stepped controls make it easy to recall exact settings and A/B your moves.

What is a diode-bridge compressor, and why is the Neve sound special?

A diode-bridge compressor uses a bridge of diodes as its gain-control element. The circuit Rupert Neve chose for the 2254, instead of the optical, FET, or VCA designs found elsewhere. Combined with Neve’s Class A amplifiers and transformers, it produces a thick, weighty, slightly aggressive “forward” character that engineers describe as the classic Neve sound. The LTD-2 brings that exact topology, which is why it glues and colors a mix the way it does.

Is the Chandler LTD-2 good for drums and snare?

Yes. The LTD-2 is a famous snare compressor and a favorite across drums in general. For snare, try a fast attack and fast release to let it “spank” and emphasize transients; it also works great on overheads or the whole drum bus. Pushed hard, it can deliver brick-wall limiting on kick or bass that helps sew a mix together.

Is the Access Analog Chandler LTD-2 real hardware or an emulation?

It is the actual Chandler LTD-2 “Sterling Mod” – a real, hand-wired analog compressor with genuine Neve-style transformers and Class A circuitry, not a software model of it. Through Access Analog, the Analog Matrix plugin robotically controls the physical hardware in real time from inside your DAW, so your audio runs through the real transformers. Real Gear. No Emulations.

Can I recall and automate my Chandler LTD-2 settings through Access Analog?

Yes. Every control on the Analog Matrix plugin is robotically linked to the physical hardware, so you can save, recall, and automate your settings inside your DAW session like any other plugin. The LTD-2’s stepped attack, release, and gain controls make that recall exact and repeatable – your settings come back precisely, on real Neve-style hardware.

How much does it cost to use the Chandler LTD-2 at Access Analog?

The Chandler LTD-2 “Sterling Mod” reserves from $4.10 per hour, an affordable way to run audio through a hand-built Neve-style compressor that is rare and expensive to own. Reserve a session on the calendar or use it on-demand with credits or an active subscription (subscriptions start at $9.98/month), and new accounts get a free hour (about 12 credits) to try real hardware.

Tips

F. Reid Shippen:  So, Wayne’s dirty little secret is that, back in the day, Chandler started out as a shop that modded and racked vintage Neve gear.  This is a stereo pair of 2264’s with original Marinar transformers, racked up, with stepped controls that were a request from mastering legend Greg Calbi of Sterling Sound.  One of the greatest solid-state compressor/limiters of all time.

SECRET SAUCE

MIX/MASTER:  Want some thick Neve transformer mojo with a touch of limiting?  Boom.
DRUMS:  This is a famous snare compressor. Mess around with attack – make it fast. Let it “spank.”  I’d also try it on your overheads or across the entire drum buss.
VOCAL:  Want a little rock and roll?  Put UA’s LA-2 on the vocal and then run it through this with a med-fast attack and fast release.
SYNTH:  Try this on all sorts of vintage synth sounds, pads, strings, etc. Slow attack fast release.
