Alt Tube

Sat. Freq. Selector
Sets which frequency range feeds the parallel saturation circuit: Low concentrates it on the low mids and sub for body and weight, High pushes it into the high mids and top for sizzle, and Flat saturates the full band.
Air Switch
Engages a gentle, fixed high-frequency lift starting around 10 kHz. Allows for an easy way to add open, expensive-sounding top end without reaching for an EQ.
Output, L/R trim, True Bypass, and the Meter
The Output control is fully passive attenuation, used to match the processed level back to bypass. A separate left/right Trim gives you up to .4 dB per side of fine balance adjustment. - Guitars: Pentode for harmonic grit, parallel saturation to taste; High for bite on clean parts, Flat for body on heavy ones.
- Synths / stereo sources: modest Pentode plus Flat parallel saturation to give in-the-box sounds analog dimension and a believable noise floor.
Step-by-Step: Dialing In Tone
Drive, compensate, compare. The HG-2 rewards small moves and honest level-matching far more than big gestures.
- Bring up the Pentode and listen for color. Add gain until you hear the harmonics arrive, then do this revealing experiment: first compensate for the added level with the Triode, listen, then reset and compensate with the Output instead. They sound different – one is adding more tube, the other is just attenuating – and hearing that difference teaches you what each control is really doing.
- Add Triode to taste. Find the smooth “velvet” zone where it’s adding richness and gentle compression. Push past it and you’ll hit a more aggressive, distorted region – useful as an effect, not as everyday glue.

- Overdriving the Triode. The velvet zone is narrower than you think. Past it you’re adding distortion, not glue – fine as a deliberate effect, wrong as a default.
- Not level-matching your A/Bs. Use True Bypass and match the Output to bypass before you decide it “sounds better.” Louder almost always sounds better for the first ten seconds.
